Police Officer Henry Laxson was shot and killed as he and other officers responded to a domestic violence and shooting call in the 3600 block of Jervis Court in Rex at about 8:40 pm. The first officers to arrive on scene encountered a 12-year-old boy who had been shot in the face. Despite his injuries, the boy was able to lead officers to his house. As the officers approached the house, a man opened fire from inside before retreating inside toward the back of the home. Officer Laxson, along with other members of the Tactical Unit, were approaching the home from the rear when they encountered the man at the rear of the house. The man opened fire a second time, fatally wounding Officer Laxson and wounding another officer. Despite their wounds, the officers were able to return fire and kill the subject. Both officers were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where Officer Laxson succumbed to his wounds.

y Constable Kareem Atkins was shot and killed from ambush while arresting a robbery suspect in the parking lot of a sports bar at 4477 North Freeway in Houston. He and two other deputy constables were working a secondary employment assignment at the restaurant when a patron informed them of a robbery in the parking lot. Deputy Atkins and one of the other deputies responded to the location and were taking a suspect into custody when another man opened fire on them from behind with an AR-15 rifle. Deputy Atkins was struck in the head and fatally wounded while the second deputy was shot in the back and seriously wounded. The third deputy heard the shots and was wounded as he rushed to assist the others. Deputy Atkins was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A person of interest was taken into custody.

Deputy Sheriff Johnny Ruiz succumbed to injuries sustained two days earlier when he was assaulted by a prisoner inside of the District 2 station at 920 E Van Buren Street in Avondale. He and other deputies had arrested a subject who was wanted for violating parole. Deputy Ruiz transported the man to the district station to book him. As he removed the handcuffs to place him in a holding cell the man suddenly attacked him. A violent struggle ensued during which Deputy Ruiz unsuccessfully attempted to use his radio to request assistance. The subject beat Deputy Ruiz unconscious. He then stole Deputy Ruiz's keys and used his patrol car to crash through the station's gate as he fled.
Other deputies located Deputy Ruiz in the holding cell and transported him to a local hospital inside a patrol car.
The subject fled the area before stealing multiple other cars. Later in the day he drove to the home of a neighbor he had a disagreement with and tried to break in. The neighbor shot and wounded the man who was then taken into custody.

Master Trooper Adam Gaubert was shot and killed from ambush in Prairieville. The suspect had shot and wounded two of his neighbors in French Settlement before stealing a pickup truck shortly after midnight. The man then drove to his half-sister's home on Dutton Road in Prairieville where he murdered her and wounded her husband. A short time the man opened fire on a Louisiana State Police trooper who attempted to pull over the truck. The man fled and remained at large throughout the day while a massive manhunt was undertaken. At some point during the incident, Trooper Gaubert was shot and killed from ambush as he sat in his patrol car near the intersection of Airline Highway and Old Jefferson Highway. The subject was arrested later in the evening.

During the traffic stop Deputy Moyers was given a false name by the driver and learned the tags belonged to a different vehicle. As he opened the driver's door to place the man in custody the subject shot Deputy Moyers in the face and back. The man fled the scene over a railroad crossing just as the arms were coming down and a train passed, blocking other deputies from immediately pursuing him. The subject was apprehended five days

Senior Police Officer Bill Jeffrey was shot and killed in the 5300 block of Aeropark Drive at about 7:30 am while serving a warrant in Harris County.
He and other officers had gone to the apartment to serve an arrest warrant as part of a high-level narcotics case. They made contact with a female subject who answered the door. As they spoke to her the wanted man emerged and opened fire without warning, striking Officer Jeffrey and another officer. Officers were able to return fire and killed the subject. Officer Jeffrey had served with the Houston Police Department for 30 years. He is survived by his wife and child. His wife had recently retired from the Houston Police Department.

Officer Blaize Madrid-Evans was shot and killed when he was dispatched to the 2300 block of South Northern Boulevard to check for a wanted subject at a residence at about 11:30 am.. As officers encountered the wanted subject the man opened fire and critically wounded Officer Madrid-Evans. Other officers on the scene returned fire and killed the subject. Officer Madrid-Evans was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds later that evening.

Police Officer Ella French was shot and killed while she and her partner conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle containing three subjects near the intersection of West 63rd Street and South Bell Avenue During the traffic stop, one of the subjects opened fire, striking Officer French and her partner. Despite their wounds, the officers were able to return fire and wounded one of the subjects. Both officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where Officer French was pronounced dead. Her partner was admitted in critical condition. All three subjects in the vehicle fled the scene. Two of the subjects were arrested shortly after the incident, and a third subject was taken into custody the following day.
Officer French had served with the Chicago Police Department for almost 3-1/2 years and was assigned to the Community Safety Team. She is survived by her mother and brother.

Deputy Sheriff Phillip Campas was shot and killed during a barricade at a home near the intersection of 1st Street and Poplar Avenue in Wasco.
Deputies had initially responded to the home for reports of a shooting at about 1:00 pm. A subject inside fired at the deputies and then barricaded himself in the home, prompting the agency's SWAT team to be deployed. At about 3:00 pm the subject opened fire on members of the SWAT team as they approached the home. Deputy Campas and another deputy were struck by the gunfire. They were both transported to a local hospital where Deputy Campas succumbed to his wounds. The subject was shot and wounded when he exchanged more shots with the SWAT team at about 6:30 pm Deputy Sheriff Campas was a U.S Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Kern County Sheriff's Officer for five years. He is survived by his wife, and three children.

Earlier in the morning, the subject had been stopped by a Texas Highway Patrol trooper for reckless driving and attempted to bait the officer into a confrontation. The subject returned home after the encounter and began walking around the neighborhood with a firearm at about 1:15 pm. When officers with the Levelland Police Department arrived, the man opened fire on him and then barricaded himself inside. The regional SWAT team was requested as the man randomly fired shots from the home. Sergeant Bartlett and three other members of the SWAT team were shot as they engaged the subject. Sergeant Bartlett was transported to Covenant Medical Center in Levelland where he succumbed to his wounds. Several other team members were wounded, one critically. . Sergeant Bartlett was a U. S. Army veteran.

Police Officer Kevin Apple was struck and killed by a vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station at the intersection of Slack Street and N Curtis Avenue. The vehicle had fled from officers in Rogers, Arkansas, earlier after they attempted to stop it for a property-related crime. Officer Apple and another officer spotted the vehicle parked in the gas station parking lot and attempted to contact the driver. The driver accelerated and struck a police car before fatally striking Officer Apple. Officers pursued the vehicle into Bella Vista where she and another occupant were arrested. Officer Apple had served with the Pea Ridge Police Department for three years and had previously served with the Lowell Police Department and Farmington Police Department.

Police Officer Gordon Beesley was shot and killed at about 1:30 pm after having responded to a suspicious event call near the Arvada Library in the 7500 block of W 57th Avenue. While on scene he became engaged in a shootout with an armed subject and was fatally shot. The subject and a bystander who came to Officer Beesley's assistance were also shot and killed.
Officer Beesley had served with the Arvada Police Department for 19 years. He was the SRO at Oberon Middle School but was assigned to patrol during the summer break.

.rgeant Dominic Vaca was shot and killed following a vehicle pursuit of a motorcycle in Yucca Valley at about 2:00 pm. Deputies were conducting enforcement operations for off-highway vehicle violations when they attempted to stop the motorcycle near Paxton Road and Imperial Drive for having no license plate. The driver abandoned the motorcycle near Dumosa Avenue and Sunnyslope Drive and set up an ambush for responding deputies. As the deputies approached the motorcycle the subject opened fire on them, fatally wounding Sergeant Vaca.
Other deputies returned fire and killed the subject.. Sergeant Vaca was flown to a trauma center where he died a short time later.
Sergeant Vaca had served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for 17 years.

3600 Table Mesa Drive.. Officer Talley was the first officer to arrive at the scene and was shot as he engaged the gunman. The subject was taken into custody a short time later after being wounded.. The subject murdered a total of 10 people, including Officer Talley, during the incident.
Officer Talley had served with the Boulder Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, seven children, and parents.

Police Officer Jordan Sheldon was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on West Plaza Drive at 10:00 pm. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The subject who shot him fled the scene and committed suicide in a nearby apartment.
Officer Sheldon had served with the Mooresville Police Department for six years.

Deputy Sheriff Justin DeRosier was shot and killed in the 100 block of Fallert Road after responding to investigate reports of a disabled motor home shortly after 10:00 pm.
After arriving at the scene, he contacted dispatchers with emergency traffic and stated he was being fired at. Members of the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office and the Kalama Police Department responded to the scene and were able to pull him to safety, he later succumbed to his wounds..Two suspects were taken into custody near the scene. A third suspect was shot and killed when he was encountered by other officers who were searching for him the following night. The subject who was killed was the half-brother of the man who murdered Chief of Police Ralph Painter of the Rainier Police Department, Oregon, on January 5th, 2011.. Deputy DeRosier had served with the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office for three years and had previously served with the Whitman County Sheriff's Office for three years. He is survived by his wife and 5-month-old daughter.

He had stopped the vehicle for a registration violation near the corner of Chicken Ranch Road and Socorro Road. He approached the car and asked the driver to step out. Corporal Daniel Groves was struck and killed by a vehicle on I-76, near mile marker 47 west of Roggen, during a blizzard. He was assisting a driver who had slid off the road when another vehicle traveling too fast for conditions also slid off the road and struck him at 11:20 am. Corporal Groves was transported to Platte Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Corporal Groves had served with the Colorado State Patrol for 12 years.

Deputy Sheriff Jacob Keltner was shot and killed as he and other members of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted to serve an arrest warrant in Rockford, Illinois.
They were attempting to arrest a man . when he opened fire with a rifle, striking a woman who was staying with him. The man then exited the room and opened fire on officers who were outside, striking Officer Keltner. The man then fled from the hotel and led officers on a pursuit that lasted over 150 miles. The vehicle became disabled on I-55 near Lincoln and the subject was taken into custody after barricading himself inside of it for several hours. Deputy Keltner was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds approximately six hours after being shot. Deputy Keltner had served with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office for 13 years. He is survived by his wife, two young children, his father and brother who both work in DuPage County law enforcement, and other family members.

Sergeant Steve Hinkle succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained three days earlier at 3606 Highway 11W. Deputies had responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check on an occupant. As they approached the home the occupant opened fire on them, causing them to seek cover. As the deputies attempted to establish communication with the man he opened fire a second time, striking Sergeant Hinkle during the exchange of gunfire. The subject was found deceased inside the home several hours later. Sergeant Hinkle was transported to the hospital where he died as a result of his wounds on February 26th, 2019. Sergeant Hinkle had served with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office for 27 years.

Detective Brian Simonsen was shot and killed while responding to a robbery at a cell phone store at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 120th Street in the Richmond Hill section of the city. Detective Simonsen and his sergeant were canvassing on an unrelated case when they heard a call for a robbery in progress. They responded to the store where they encountered a subject and attempted to apprehend him. As patrol officers responded to the scene both detectives, who were in plainclothes, were struck by friendly fire as the suspect pointed what was later determined to be a fake gun at responding officers.. Detective Simonsen succumbed to his wounds. His sergeant was transported to a local hospital with injuries. The suspect was also shot and wounded. Detective Simonsen had served with the New York City Police Department for 19 years and was assigned to the 102nd Pct

Detective Bill Brewer was shot and killed after responding to call from a suicidal man armed with a gun at an apartment complex at 368 St. Andrews Drive in Pierce Township.
Shortly before 7:00 pm the Clermont County Sheriff's Office received a call from the man who initially stated that someone had broken into his home. The same man later told 911 dispatchers that he was suicidal and armed with a gun. When officers arrived they couldn't contact the man who had barricaded himself inside his apartment.
Several minutes later the man fired several shots prompting officers from several agencies to respond and begin to negotiate with him. At 10:30 pm the man again opened fire from his apartment. The shots struck and killed Detective Brewer and wounded a second deputy. The man was taken into custody inside of the apartment by members of the SWAT Team a short time later. Detective Brewer had served with the Clermont County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. His is survived by his wife and 5-year-old son.

Investigators had received information that the wanted subject was going to be in the area of a retail store at 50 West University Parkway, in Orem. Members of the Provo Police Department and the Orem Police Department located the subject in the parking lot and attempted to take him into custody. During the arrest the man opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Shinners. The subject was also wounded in the shootout and is in custody. Officer Shinners was transported to Utah Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds shortly before midnight.

Police Officer Michael Smith succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained on December 6th, 2018, while struggling with a suspect at a dentist's office at 378 Jonesboro Road in McDonough. The office staff had called police after the man entered the business and started to create a disturbance. Upon Officer Smith's arrival, the man became combative resulting in Officer Smith deploying his Taser. The Taser was ineffective and the man began to struggle with Officer Smith while attempting to disarm him of his service weapon. As Officer Smith struggled to retain control of his weapon it discharged a single round, killing the man and striking Officer Smith in the face. Officer Smith was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He was later transferred to Piedmont Hospital for rehabilitation but suffered complications and died on December 28th, 2018. Officer Smith had served with the Henry County Police Department for seven years. He is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son.

He was arrested in Bakersfield, California two days later while attempting to flee back to Mexico.

Sergeant Moreno's patrol pickup and a second patrol vehicle both collided with a vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction. Sergeant Moreno and the two occupants of the other vehicle, including an infant, all succumbed to their injuries. A deputy in Sergeant Moreno's vehicle and the deputy in the second patrol car were both injured.
Sergeant Moreno had served with the Las Animas County Sheriff's Office for five years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and one stepson.

He and other responding officers arrived at the scene as the suspects attempted to leave in a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle accelerated toward the officers and struck Officer Romrell. Other officers fired a the driver, killing him. The passenger fled on foot but was apprehended by a canine unit a short time later.
Officer Romrell was transported to Intermountain Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries while in emergency surgery.
Officer Romrell was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the South Salt Lake Police Department for 11 months. He is survived by his wife and 4-month-old child.

As officers arrived on the scene the male subject fatally shot his ex-fiancee, who was a doctor at the hospital. He then ran into the hospital with officers pursuing him. As they entered the hospital the man exchanged shots with Officer Jimenez, striking him and a bystander. Another officer's duty belt was also struck by the gunfire.
The subject was also shot and killed during the exchange. Officer Jimenez and the bystander were both transported to another hospital where they succumbed to their wounds.
Officer Jimenez had served with the Chicago Police Department for 18 months.

Sergeant Ron Helus was shot and killed after responding to an active shooter at a bar at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive in Thousand Oaks. When he arrived, Sergeant Helus heard gunfire coming from inside the bar, which was occupied by nearly 200 college students. He and a California Highway Patrol officer immediately made entry into the bar and confronted the shooter, but Sergeant Helus was shot and severely wounded. The other officer was able to pull Sergeant Helus from the building and provided medical aid.
Sergeant Helus was taken to a local hospital where he died from his wounds. Eleven citizens were also shot and killed in the incident, and numerous others were wounded.
The suspect was later found dead inside the bar from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sergeant Helus served with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office for 29 years. He is survived by his wife and son..

Investigator Farrah Turner suffered fatal gunshot wounds when she and other investigators from the Florence County Sheriff's Office arrived at a home to interview a suspect as part of a sex offense investigation. Another subject in the house opened fire on the deputies as they approached the house, wounding all three. The man then positioned himself in a vantage point in a second-floor window, giving him a view of fire of several hundred yards. The subject remained barricaded inside of his home for two hours before being taken into custody. All of the wounded officers were transported to a local hospital . Investigator Turner underwent nine surgeries and remained in critical condition until succumbing to her wounds on October 22nd, 2018.

Police Officer Antwan Toney was shot and killed as he and another officer investigated reports of a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of Bethany Church Road and Shiloh Road at approximately 3:00 pm. As the officers approached the vehicle at least one person inside opened fire, shooting through the vehicle's windows. Officer Toney was struck as he and the other officer returned fire. The vehicle crashed a short distance away and its four occupants fled on foot.
One of the suspects was apprehended later in the afternoon after shooting at an officer who was searching for him. The subject believed to have been the one to shoot Officer Toney was shot and killed on October 22nd, 2018, after being located hiding in a shed in the Snellville area. He was shot after refusing to obey commands while armed with a lawnmower blade. Officer Toney was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds.
Officer Toney had served with the Gwinnett County Police Department for three years.

Police Officer Terrence Carraway was shot and killed while responding to assist three Florence County Sheriff's Office deputies who had been shot and wounded while serving a sexual assault warrant at a house off of Vintage Drive. Another subject in the house opened fire on the deputies as they approached the house, wounding all three. The man then positioned himself in a vantage point in a second-floor window, giving him a view of fire of several hundred yards. Officer Carraway, along with three other Florence police officers, responded to the scene and were attempting to rescue the three wounded deputies when the subject opened fire on them too, shooting all four. All of the wounded officers were transported to a local hospital where Officer Carraway succumbed to his wounds. The subject remained barricaded inside of his home for two hours before being taken into custody. Officer Carraway had served with the Florence Police Department for 30 years.

Deputy Sheriff Mark Stasyuk was shot and killed at approximately 1:50 pm as he and another a deputy responded to a disturbance call at an auto parts store at 10899 Folsom Boulevard. A male subject opened fire on them without warning as they arrived on the scene, fatally wounding Deputy Stasyuk and wounding the other officers. Other responding deputies shot and wounded the suspect as he fled on foot. The man was then taken into custody.
Deputy Stasyuk had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for 4-1/2 years.

Deputy Sheriff Robert Kunze was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious person call in a rural area near the intersection of North 295th Street West and West 21st Street North. He arrived at the scene and made contact with a male subject in a stolen vehicle. During the encounter he and the subject exchanged shots and both were fatally shot. Deputy Kunze's backup officer arrived at the scene and located Deputy Kunze suffering from a gunshot wound.
Deputy Kunze had served with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office for 12 years and had previously served with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office for six years. He is survived by his wife and child.

Police Officer Garrett Hull succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous night as he and other members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit attempted to apprehend three armed robbery suspects. The officers had been conducting surveillance of the three suspects, who had been involved in more than 15 armed robberies in which three people were shot. The suspects entered a bar on the 400 block of West Biddison Street shortly before midnight and robbed the 10 patrons at gunpoint. As they fled from the building the officers attempted to take them into custody. All three suspects attempted to flee on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. During the foot pursuit, one of the men opened fire, striking Officer Hull in the head. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject before placing Officer Hull in a patrol car and transporting him to a hospital.
The other two suspects were apprehended nearby. Officer Hull succumbed to his wounds the following evening.

Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained on July 21st, 2018, after responding to an assault and larceny call at a gas station at 3915 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard at approximately 7:30 pm. As officers arrived the suspect fled on foot along Flint Drive, with Officer Jobbers-Miller in pursuit. The man opened fire with a handgun, striking Officer Jobbers-Miller. Another officer transported him to Lee Memorial Hospital where he remained until succumbing to his wound on July 28th, 2018.
The subject was taken into custody at the scene after being shot and wounded.
Officer Jobbers-Miller served with the Fort Myers Police Department for three years and had previously served as a firefighter with the Wayne Fire Department in New Jersey.

Police Officer Bronson Kaliloa was shot and fatally wounded at approximately 9:30 pm as he and other officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop of a wanted subject on Highway 11, in the area of Kukui Camp Road, in Mountain View. As officers approached the vehicle the wanted subject exited and opened fire with a handgun, striking Officer Bronson in the neck and leg. Other officers returned fire as the subject fled into a dense area of brush along the roadside. Officer Kaliloa was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds shortly after midnight. The subject who murdered Officer Kaliloa was located when several associates attempted to smuggle him through a checkpoint in South Point. As a member of the agency's Special Response Team opened the rear hatch of an SUV the subject emerged from underneath a blanket an opened fire, wounding the officer. Other members of the SRT returned fire, killing the subject and wounding one of the other subjects. All of the subjects were taken into custody and held in connection with being accomplices. Officer Kaliloa had served with the Hawaii County Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his wife and three young children..

Trooper Tyler Edenhofer was shot and killed after he and several officers responded to reports of a subject throwing objects at vehicles on I-10, near Avondale Boulevard in Goodyear, at approximately 10:00 pm.
Three Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers and two Goodyear Police Department officers responded to the scene and attempted to take the subject into custody. The man resisted arrested and engaged the officers in a struggle that lasted several minutes. The subject was able to obtain one of the officers' duty weapons during the struggle and opened fire, killing Trooper Edenhofer and wounding another Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper. The subject was taken into custody.
Trooper Edenhofer had graduated from the police academy only three months earlier and was still in field training at the time of the incident. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Police Officer Michael Michalski was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a wanted subject in the area of 28th Street and Wright Street. The subject was wanted for weapons violations, narcotics violations, and violation of parole. Officer Michalski and other members of the Special Investigations Division located the man in the area and attempted to take him into custody. The man fled on foot and the officers pursued him into a nearby home. The subject opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Michalski. Other officers returned fire but the subject was not struck. The man surrendered after he ran out of ammunition.
Officer Michalski had served with the Milwaukee Police Department for 17 years. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

Sergeant Chesna was shot and killed with his own service weapon after responding to reports of an erratic driver on Burton Terrace, behind South Shore Hospital, shortly after 7:30 am. When he arrived at the scene he discovered that the vehicle had crashed and he found the driver vandalizing a home nearby. The man attacked Sergeant Chesna, striking him in the head with a large rock. The subject then disarmed him, shot him in the head and chest, and fled the scene. The man fatally shot a woman in her home before being wounded by other responding officers and taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of homicide. Sergeant Chesna was a U.S Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He served with the Weymouth Police Department for six years. He is survived by his wife and two children. Sergeant Chesna was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.

They were unloading the prisoner from the transport van in the facility's exterior sally port when the man attacked them. He was able to disarm one of the deputies and shot them both. Despite being mortally wounded, one of the deputies was able to return fire and wounded the subject.
Deputy King was transported to a local hospital where she passed away shortly after midnight. Deputy King had served with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office for 13 years. She is survived by her three children.

Deputy Sheriff William Gentry succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous night while responding to an animal abuse call at a home in the 200 block of Baltimore Way in which a homeowner's cat had been fatally shot with a pellet gun. He and a deputy he was training had responded to the victim's home. During the investigation Deputy Gentry went to the suspect's home, a convicted felon who lived next door, to make contact with him. As he stood at the front door the suspect opened fire on him, shooting him in the head.
The 69-year-old subject was taken into custody at the scene and charged with numerous counts. Deputy Gentry was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his wound the following day. Deputy Gentry had served with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office for nine years. He is survived by a brother, who also serves with the agency.

Police Officer Rob Pitts was shot and killed while conducting a homicide investigation at the Garder Quarter Apartments on Linwood Court. Investigators were following up on leads from a homicide that occurred earlier in the day. As Officer Pitts and other detectives approached the homicide suspect's apartment they man opened fire on them, fatally wounding Officer Pitts. Officer Pitts was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The subject who shot him was located deceased inside of his apartment after barricading himself inside.
Officer Pitts had served with the Terre Haute Police Department for 16 years.

Corporal Eugene Cole was shot and killed along Route 2, in Norridgewock, by a subject who was out on bond for a previous weapons charge.
The subject shot Corporal Cole and then stole his fully-marked patrol car between 1:00 am and 2:00 am. He drove the cruiser to a nearby store and robbed it, before fleeing again. He abandoned the patrol car nearby, and fled on foot. After a four-day manhunt in the area, the 29-year-old suspect was apprehended.
Corporal Cole had served with the Somerset County Sheriff's Office for 13 years. He is survived by four sons, one of whom also serves with the agency.

The subject had carjacked a vehicle in Patagonia and fled from Santa Cruz County deputies into Nogales, where he attempted to carjack another vehicle. Nogales officers had responded to the attempted carjacking and located the suspect inside of a car. As officers attempted a traffic stop, the man exited the vehicle and opened fire on Officer Cordova, who was still in his vehicle. Officer Cordova was struck multiple times. Officer Cordova was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The man then fled the scene and carjacked a third vehicle. He was located a short time later and taken into custody.

Police Officer Rogelio Santander succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous day while he and two other officers attempted to arrest a shoplifting suspect at a Home Depot store at 11682 Forest Central Drive.. An off-duty officer working overtime at the store and the store's loss prevention officer had detained a subject who attempted to shoplift in the store. During the investigation, it was determined the man had an outstanding felony warrant and the off-duty officer requested additional units. Officer Santander and another officer arrived at the store and remained with the subject in the loss prevention office as the off-duty officer confirmed the warrant. As Officer Santander and the other officer attempted to place the man in custody he drew a handgun from his pocket and shot both officers and the loss prevention officer, critically wounding all three. The man fled the scene but was located later in the day following a vehicle pursuit.
Both wounded police officers and the loss prevention officer were transported to a local hospital where Officer Santander succumbed to his wounds the following morning.
Officer Santander had served with the Dallas Police Department for three years.

Police Officer Sean Gannon was shot and killed while assisting with a warrant service at 109 Blueberry Lane, in Barnstable. Officer Gannon and his canine partner, Nero, were searching the home and located the wanted man in a closet. The man opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Gannon and wounding Nero. The man then barricaded himself inside the house for two hours before being taken into custody. The 29-year-old subject was charged with Officer Gannon's murder. His record showed he had 111 prior offenses and was on probation.
Officer Gannon had served with the Yarmouth Police Department for 7-1/2 years and previously served with the Stonehill College Police Department and Nantucket Police Department.

Police Officer Gregg Casillas was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a man in the 1400 block of South Palomares Street following a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle fled after officers attempted to stop it for reckless driving. The driver crashed into another vehicle before fleeing on foot and entering an apartment. As Officer Casillas and another officer attempted to make contact with the man he fired through the apartment door, striking both officers. The officers were both transported to a local hospital where Officer Casillas succumbed to his wounds. The man surrendered after remaining barricaded inside his home for more than 15 hours. He was charged with Officer Casillas' murder as well as several counts of attempted murder of a peace officer.
Officer Casillas had served with the Pomona Police Department for six months and was still in field training at the time of the incident. He had been employed as a civilian with the agency for three years before entering the police academy. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Police Officer Scotty Hamilton was shot and killed at approximately 11:30 pm as he and a Kentucky State Police trooper conducted criminal patrol on Hurricane Road, in the Hurricane Creek area of Pike County. The officers were in the area as a result of recent narcotics activity when they encountered a suspicious vehicle. As Officer Hamilton checked the area for the vehicle's occupants he encountered a man and was shot in the head. ne suspect was taken into custody at the scene. A second suspect fled the scene but apprehended several days later.
Officer Hamilton had served with the Pikeville Police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and child.

Reserve Officer Chris Lawton was killed after being intentionally struck by a vehicle as he attempted to serve a narcotics-related felony warrant.
He and another officer had spotted the wanted subject inside a U-Haul truck parked at the Walmart on Plank Road, in Baker, Louisiana. After observing the subject for several minutes the officers parked their patrol car behind the truck and began to approach it on foot. The subject saw them walking alongside the truck and started to drive away, pinning Officer Lawton between the truck and a shopping cart corral. fficer Lawton's partner was able to broadcast a description of the vehicle, which was located approximately 20 minutes later. The driver was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, hit and run, and being a fugitive from justice. A second occupant of the vehicle was charged with obstruction of justice.
Officer Lawton served as a part-time, unpaid reserve officer with Zachary Police Department for 10 years and also served as a full-time firefighter with the Zachary Fire Department.

The subject saw them walking alongside the truck and started to drive away, pinning Officer Lawton between the truck and a shopping cart corral. fficer Lawton's partner was able to broadcast a description of the vehicle, which was located approximately 20 minutes later. The driver was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, hit and run, and being a fugitive from justice. A second occupant of the vehicle was charged with obstruction of justice.
Officer Lawton served as a part-time, unpaid reserve officer with Zachary Police Department for 10 years and also served as a full-time firefighter with the Zachary Fire Department.

Deputy Sheriff Jake Pickett succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained while attempting to apprehend a wanted subject. The man had fled from Lebanon police officers who had gone to his home to serve a warrant on a different person. The officers recognized the man as also having warrants but he fled in a vehicle with two other people when the officers tried to take him into custody. Deputy Pickett, a canine handler, joined the pursuit until it came to a stop on Indian Springs Road. The wanted man fled on foot with Deputy Pickett and his canine in pursuit. Deputy Pickett was shot in the head as he rounded the corner of a building. The subject was shot and wounded by another officer but was able to return to the vehicle and flee again. He was taken into custody following another vehicle pursuit that ended on I-65.. Deputy Pickett was transported to Witham Hospital before being flown to St. Vincent Hospital, in Indianapolis, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was kept on life support until the evening of March 4th, 2018, so that his organs could be donated. Deputy Pickett had served with the Boone County Sheriff's Office for three years. He had previously served with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office for two years and the Marion County Sheriff's Office for three years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Police Officer Justin Billa was shot and killed while assisting in the apprehension of a man who had just murdered his ex-wife. Investigators at the scene of the original murder identified the subject as a person of interest. Officer Billa, along with other officers, went to the man's home on Avondale Court to make contact with him. As the officers arrived on scene the subject exited the home and opened fire on them, striking Officer Billa. Another officer returned fire as the subject retreated back into the home. Officer Billa was transported to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he died a short time later. The subject remained barricaded inside his home for the next three hours. His body was recovered from the home following the standoff.
Officer Billa had served with the Mobile Police Department for two years. He is survived by his wife and one 1-year-old son.

Other officers had attempted to conduct a subject stop on the man in connection with a shooting that had occurred several days earlier. The subject fled from the officers. Commander Bauer, who was wearing a suit and in the area for a meeting, observed the subject at the government building and attempted to stop him in a stairwell. The subject opened fire, killing Commander Bauer.

Police Officer David Sherrard was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance at an apartment complex at 4250 East Renner Road. As officers arrived on scene they located a man suffering from a gunshot wound outside of the apartment. The officers were able to identify an apartment where the suspect was located. As they made entry into the apartment the man opened fire, striking Officer Sherrard in the neck. Officer Sherrard was transported to Medical City Plano where he succumbed to his wound. The subject barricaded himself inside of the apartment for several hours before surrendering. The man who shot Officer Sherrard was charged with capital murder of a police officer.
Officer Sherrard had served with the Richardson Police Department for 13 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Several officers attempted to take a suspect into custody, but the man began to struggle and then opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Flick and wounding two other deputies, a Colorado Springs police officer, and a bystander. The man was shot and killed by return gunfire.

Deputy Sheriff Heath Gumm was shot and killed during a foot pursuit near 88th Avenue and Dawson Street, in Thornton. Deputies had responded to an assault in progress call at approximately 7:30 pm and became involved in the foot pursuit with one of the subjects. The man ran behind a house in the 8700 block of Dawson Street. As Deputy Gumm ran behind the house he was shot by the subject and struck in the chest. The subject was apprehended and charged with murder of a peace officer and two additional counts of murder. A search continued for two additional subjects.
Deputy Gumm had served with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for four years. He is survived by his wife and family.

Deputies had originally responded to a domestic disturbance at which a man had attacked his wife before fleeing into a wooded area near his home. The man ambushed a canine officer who was attempting to locate him, wounding him. The subject also shot a law enforcement helicopter that was assisting with the search. Following the wounding of the canine officer, a SWAT team responded to the scene to continue searching for the man in the 1400 block of South Parham Road. The man setup a second ambush, wounding Detective Doty and two other members of the SWAT team before being shot and wounded. Detective Doty was flown to a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he died the following day.
Detective Doty had served with the York County Sheriff's Office for 12 years.

Deputy McCartney was the first officer on scene and became engaged in a foot pursuit of at least one subject. The man opened fire on Deputy McCartney during the foot pursuit, mortally wounding him. Deputy McCartney was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center where he passed away at approximately 2:00 am.
One subject was found dead at the scene. A second subject was arrested the following day after a massive manhunt.

Deputy Parrish and other deputies were speaking to the occupants of the apartment when one of them barricaded himself inside a bedroom. The man opened fire with a rifle, killing Deputy Parrish and wounding three other deputies. The three wounded deputies were able to retreat to safety. Responding officers, including regional SWAT team members, re-entered the apartment to rescue Deputy Parrish. The subject inside opened fire on the officers, wounding a Castle Rock police officer before being shot and killed.
The subject fired over 100 rounds during the incident, wounding two citizens in addition to shooting the officers.
Deputy Parrish had served with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for seven months and had previously served with the Castle Rock Police Department for two years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The Brotherhood for the Fallen Aurora would like to honor one of our own who passed from natural causes on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. Officer Joseph Walter Bumberger was a 23 year veteran of the Aurora, CO Police Department. While at the Aurora Police Department he worked in Patrol, Gang Unit, PAR Unit and for the last 12 years in the Traffic Unit.
At his memorial service Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz posthumously promoted him from Officer to Sergeant in honor of his professionalism, service and dedication to the citizen's to the city of Aurora.
Sergeant Bumberger was a motorcycle certification instructor and TOP GUN champion and was very well respected though out state law enforcement for his dedication to the profession.
Although not a line of duty death, Sergeant Bumberger received full police honors at his service which was attended by hundreds of family members, Police Officers and members of the community.
Our hearts are broken at the loss of our brother. Rest in peace MOTOR 51, we'll take it from here.
